Any advice welcomed....quite a novice but need to make a giants head for a panto. I have used pva and kitchen towel quite succesfully in the past for various props as I like the hard finish, great to cover polystyrene but will it hold shape well enough when I remove the mold? ( I will cover a plastic bin bag filled with scrunched paper) Any suggestions?

Welcome to the board, mags! We haven't had any large heads, lately!
How large is this head to be?
I don't see why your plan wouldn't work.
If it will be quite large (1 m tall or so), you may need a couple of extra layers to compensate for the span. When completely dry, you should be able to push against the papier mache 'skull' and tell if it's firm enough for your purposes.
Since you must be certain to cover with full layers (no thin spots), make the alternate layers different colors, or add some tint to the PVA for the alternate layers. This will show you if you've missed any spots. A spoonful of tempera powder (the cheap stuff for kids is fine) should do.

Thanks to Ricky for all the info and photos of the head, they have been a great help. I have enjoyed reading all the various PM recipies but took the easy option using diluted pva, newspaper and kitchen towel. The result was quite pleasing for a first attempt and I look forward to being a little more ambitious in the future. I feel this is the start of another very time consuming hobby!!
