What do you mean by 'glue'?   Do you mean PVA (white glue or Elmers)?  If so, no you don't have to use it but there are weaknesses in flour paste.
Have a look at my article on the home page.

Different adhesives and glues will give different results. The organic, food-based types have the main drawback that they may attract insects or rodents. Synthetic glues (like regular white craft glue, which is a vinyl) have other properties that can make them better (or not) for a project.

Adhesives you can use for papier mache:

Methyl cellulose (some wallpaper pastes are mainly this, but not all of them)
White PVA craft glue
Wheat flour and water
Potato flour and water
Rice flour and water

For you club, any of them would probably work fine.

Re: My friend doesnt beleive that

Gee, thanks David for posting that article about glue, I have been away working and only just read it today.  It is a pity that more people don't share their info with us in the articles section, and more new tutorials would be great too.  It just goes to show there is always something new to learn from people..  Thanks again David.
Lesley.  ps Thanks to you Sue as well, always there to help...thanks.

If you use the flour/water glue...add some bleach to the glue. it helps to keep bugs and roadents out. plus, never store sculptures in open boxes. always use the rubber storage boxes with lids. that way nothing will get to sculptures in storage. I have found that sealing the sculpture with a sealer also helps with the problem.

If you found me a stranger, may you soon be my friend...
