Chiken wire

Hi all:
I said i was going to try to make and figure with chiken wire.
I tried , but its realy hard to handle it .
When i bought it i think was softer, it is galvanized ,maybe is that ?
Im disapointed , and now i should have a chicken farm , because i have to buy a roll  of 30 meters.
I dont want to give up , maybe is another kind of wire ?
Thanks again .
Maria .

Re: Chiken wire

It sounds as though you may have got galvanised fencing.  If you cannot bend it with your fingers, it will not be what we know as chicken wire.
If however you CAN bend it reasonably with your fingers, it should be OK.
It is best to use protective gloves and you will certainly need pliers and wire cutters to force it into shape.
Do you like eggs?

Re: Chiken wire

The galvanizing shouldn't make much difference in the stiffness of the wire, it's just a protective coating.

This is what we call chicken wire: http://images.asia.ru/img/alibaba/photo … etting.jpg

Chicken wire isn't the easiest material to handle and is hard on your hands. Small shapes must be very, very simple, like just a tube or other simple shape. Chicken wire is most useful for papier mache when you are making larger items or the basic form for larger items.

Here is Spanish artist Nacho Carbonell who makes "chairs" from papier mache-covered chicken wire: http://www.dezeen.com/2008/04/28/evolut … carbonell/

Jackie, who owns this site, shows a beautiful Bassett Hound that she made from chicken wire in her e-book 'Papier Mache Art and Design' (available on the right side of this page).

Maybe you can find someone who will buy the wire from you.

Re: Chiken wire

Bird wire is what I use in Australia.
Chicken wire has holes about 40mm and bird wire has holes about 12mm. Bird wire is a much thinner guage and I use ordinary scissors to cut it. I've never been satisfied with an arbour that I've created not using bird wire. For bigger jobs I build an internal frame to hold it up.
Enjoy

Re: Chiken wire

In the UK the wire we use is actually rabbit wire (12mm holes) although it has acquired the name chicken wire for everyone except old fashioned ironmongers.
