Splitting

I covered a plastic soda pop bottle with paper mache and when it dried it had split and cracked. What can I do to prevent that in the future??
Thanks,
Mame :?  :?

...use strips of glue-soaked paper next time.

Dear Mame try packing out the bottle with compressed newspaper that way it won't buckle under the weight of the p.m. If you used pulp allow it to dry slowly.

Re: Splitting

Hi Mame! Excellent suggestions above. Also must ask if you are alternating layers -- one horizontally, one vertically? Alternating layers is also a way of ensuring durability.

Re: Splitting

What has happened here is that the papier mache shrank as it dried, the soda bottle did not shrink!!!
By following the good advise already given you will be "cushioning" the papiermache with the padded paper that will allow the papier mache to shrink without splitting
