Yes, it is freaking expensive! Much too expensive!! But it's the only thing that works, and when you need it, you need it.
There's other paper clays too, but I suspect these are lumpy. There's a recipe for paper clay that uses toilet paper and firing clay. You then fire the piece and burn away the paper. The result is a stronger piece. However, you need to be making pretty big pieces.
Oh! I'd die for a kiln! I'd love to make Raku! But, there's another way. At my local Saturday street fair, there's a gal who makes night lights out of tin cans. She cuts old cans for light to escape, then paints 'em with Krylon paint, then torches the paint for an irridesceent finish that's superb! She sells these too! Lots of 'em! They're really pretty!
I think I'm turning into a craft-a-holic!

I wish I could afford it. Unfortunately, it is a little out of my league. The whole reason I started doing papier-mache was that I was too poor to do anything else at the time. Now I am in love with it, and would never leave it for another medium. 
I'll just have to stick with my paper and glue until someone drives a dump truck of money up to my house. *grins*

I have a web site which tells you how to make paperclay if you are interested but when i write the web page It does not go to the right page. I could copy and paste it in here but as it is not my words i don't think I'm allowed to do that.
But I could if you want, email it to any body who wants it I think that would work.

I have found a number of websites for paperclay recipes, Graham Hawes seems to be the artist of choice for the paperclay communities. However each of the sites is pitched at the ceramicist and discusses proportions for firing.

Obviously I don't want to fire any pieces so has anyone any idea if the proportion of clay to paper pulp needs to be changed for our needs?

Paper for clay use with firing isn't even close to Creative Paperclay or anything suitable for PM. Paper for clay is simply paper (up to 25%) kneaded into regular firing clay. Clay, except in tiny amounts, is not really a material for PM, in my opinion.
Clay, as non-drying Plasticine (or Plastacina) or air-drying natural clays are great as mold material to form PM on, but that's about it, as far as I can see.
Creative Paperclay, for those interested, is made from ash, talc, water, wood pulp, and preservative. At something like $14 per pound.
By the way, I know it takes more time to type, but if you are referring to the commercial product, Creative Paperclay, it would probably be best to use the entire name. Many people are getting confused at the use of paperclay (for use with firing clay) and a shortened version of Creative Paperclay. If you don't know the other one exists, a newbie is likely to think they are one and the same.

I had a feeling that there was a difference and I am really not keen on anything that I can't successfully manufacture myself. I have considered Fimo (UK name for air drying clay) as an alternative in extremis.

I have never used Paperclay so didn't know.
I like to stick to the basics of paper as far as I can take it. Buying extra materials to add to my projects takes me away from the whole idea or recycling.
The site i found is of no use as it is more for ceramics.

Actually, Creative Paperclay is fine for PM as Lengo is using it: as a thin, smooth layer on top of PM. Using it that way, you can get a smooth surface and lots of detail. It isn't really PM, but it can serve a purpose for certain things, despite its price.

Well, I certainly won't use it to make a whole pieceat that price! Sheesh! I'd be in the poor house really fast.
It is VERY handy. It can solve problems that can't be solved other ways. I can think of no other way to make the cheeks on Gus. It's great for filling in depressions too. For really fine detail, it works. Don't dismiss it as unacceptable for PM!
Now, where's me clay. I gotta make Gus' hair bigger (and had I known this at the start, I woulda started with pulp)!
What was that rule? I think somebody said 'whatever works'.
And personally, I think that fired paper clay looks totally awesome! I have no access to a kiln, but if I did, I'd give it a go. Still, I don't quite understand how paper in the clay makes it stronger, but oh well, I'm not here to know everything!
p.s. Gus got taller! I hadda lengthen his legs a little so that his shoes looked right. Hiding the repair (more toilet paper insert) with paper clay was a snap! There is no seam at all, and I was done in less than two hours.
GO GET SOME FREAKIN' CREATIVE CLAY! You'll have fun with it!
