Hi Fellow Mashers,
I have several small chests I want to rejuvenate using pm and paint. Do any of you furniture-makers decorate existing furniture? If so, I'd appreciate any tips about applying pm to wood. For example, which is preferable, pm strips or pulp? After decoration, what type of sealant should be used?
I just joined PaperMacheArt@yahoogroups.com and recognize some names from this forum.
I love the generous give-and-take of the pm community. I particularly enjoy that people of different cultures communicate so effectively through this amazing art medium.
Happy holidays!

I seem to remember reading about something like that some years ago, but can't bring up any details.
I would try a few samples and attach them to a non-important wooden board, using several methods, and see how it goes.
Finish could probably be either shellac or varnish. I know that varnish comes in a matte variety, but I don't know about shellac... I've never seen matte, but that doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

Hello,
I decorated a little plastic garden chair with pm and a wooden doll cradle. The little cradle was already sealed. I first applied strips. Then I applied pulp. I had no problems... Are those chests already sealed or are they untreated (pure wood)? If they are untreated I suppose they first have to be sealed because the wood will soak the pm moisture and maybe the chest is going to warp. Perhaps a mixture of white PVA glue and water (1:1) would be able to prove the wood... I´ve got a primer that can be used on wood or to prevent cement or plaster from soaking, but I just know the german word (Tiefengrund). But I´m sure it is also available in UK or USA.
