I found this homepage as I was searching for a material to build a big object in our garden. We own a farm in Austria and we are selling Styrian pumpkin seed oil. So we decided to place a big pumpkin on our farm near to the street for advertising. Outside it should just look like an styrian pumpkin (which looks a lot like the orange halloween pumpkins) and in the inside we would like to use it as a playing house for our kids. The pumpkin schould be about 4 meters high !!!
As it stands outsides all year it should be waterproofed and also snowproofed. We thought about making the inside frame wodden (because we thought wood would be more able to support the snow in the winter than wire grating) and now I´m looking for something to put over the wood so we can get it smoothly and paint it for finishing.
Now I was reading the article over waterproofing papier-mache. Do you think it would work out for such a big object too? And is it even possible to make such a hughe project out of paier-mache?

... a fun project but a daunting task... yes, papier mache could work... but it could take long time to finish & a fair amount of good weather to go with it... have you considered fiberglass or cement and plaster for the pumpkin shell?...

... or how about those inflatable tents?...

I would tend to agree with Sebrink: papier mache wouldn't be my material of choice for this project. For that size, you would need something stronger and more water-resistant.
