How to make life size trees

Hi, I am kind of new at all this papier mache stuff.  I was just wondering if any of you know how to make a full size tree.  My high school drama class is
needs a tree and I took the job without realizing how hard it is.  If anyone has suggestions they would be greatly accepted.

How big of a tree? Does the tree need to be free standing or can it be anchored to a wall? I would say the first thing you have to do is to run down to the fabric store and ask them for some of their long cardboard fabric tubes-Point is you need a base. Use a big heavy tube for the base (upolstry stores may have the heaviest)

Re: How to make life size trees

The next thing is to get the whole class involved.  Collect tubes from kitchen rolls, toilet rolls etc.
Decide what sort of size you want the leaves to be.
Get everyone to make some thin tubes by rolling newspaper with a smear of paste (flour paste created by bringing some flour-mixed-with-water-to-a-thin-cream to boiling will do since this is likely to be a very temporary thing) and dried thoroughly.
Get everyone also to make a pile of leaves out of green paper (even green bits glued back to back out of pictures in magazines).
You then have your raw materials and can assemble them with glue, wire and by applying one or more layers of paper laminate over them for unity and strength. lol

The tree needs to be free standing.  The tree is going to have it's branches overhanging the dessert table.  Everyone wants to know how to make the branches.  And how to make them actually look realistic.
