Hello everyone. This is my first post as I am a brand new member.
I've been asked to make a series of ostrich egg sized eggs to use in a theatre show. I'm used to making more crude designs with papier mache (big masks and structures using chicken wire) but the requirements for this are quite specific. The client would like:
1. A semi-transparant effect (as there will be lights which shine through the eggs)
2. An extremely smooth finish - like, well...an egg! 
He wants the eggs to be delicate and assures me they will be handled with kid gloves. I usually make things to last, but this doesn't seem to matter so much here.
I'd be extremely grateful for any advice.

I've never tried it before, but I have a suggestion. All the round balloons I've blown up have made perfect egg shapes. Maybe you could mache them with several layers of tissue paper for a transparent effect.

Paper Rose's idea of tissue paper is good, but I would also suggest a transparent strong adhesive pm paste like water/woodglue (diluted 1/2-1) . You should also ad lots of layers of varnish. Good Luck~tammy

I made eggs before, I used sewing thread as the armberature (sp). I covered a balloon with clingwrap, and dipped the thread in elmer's glue and covered the balloon loosely with it and hung it up to dry. The more thread, the stronger the project will be. When it was dry, I covered that with the tissue paper you buy in the gift wrapping section of your local department store, the kind you stuff into gift bags. To paper mache' the tissue paper, just dip small torn squares of tissue into your glue mixure and spread onto the thread to dry. Smooth it as well as you can while it is danp beacuse you will not be able to sand it like a regualr project. When the project is dry and sturdy enough go ahead and burst the balloon, and then carefully :shock: pull out what you can of the clingwrap. Then seal the outside with hairspray. I use that nasty stuff you buy at the dollar store that is mostly laquer, and I do it outside.
