I am wondering if any of you are entering your art in traditional art shows, as opposed to festivals where you take as much as you want to sell. It seems to me that where I live, small mid-western city, paper mache is not seen as art so much as crafts, no matter what the subject or style.
you're right, many people seem to see the material as something that only "quirky, silly" things can be made. I think if someone has talent they can make a go of any material though.
I have shown my work in galleries in major cities and also been the featured artist on a state (not national) PBS show about art. My work is all papier mache. So there you go.

Yes there seems to be a general view that papier mache pieces equal craft...
In my view its the content of the piece that determines whether it should be labled as art or craft and not the material.
When I exhibit my work I always advertise that the pieces of art on show are created from 'recycled materials integrated with the traditional technique of papier mache' making it an eco friendly sculpture. :mrgreen:
