Sorry for taking me so long to answer...
to make the work so smooth i use Gold bond, all purpose, ready mix JOINT COMPOUND
which is used to smooth walls......so i cover first a thinny layer all over the work , then when it is dry second layer more generous...when it dries a bit, smooth it a bit with a wet rag.
Let it dry for at least 24 hours, then sand it with a sand paper.
if it is not smooth enought, repit all the process again
