I was taught the alibrijes method of the Mexican Linares family by Marcella Montoya-Turnill, who gave her permission to do so. Here in UK we might call it sculptural papier-mache or even mixed media. Begin by making an armature of wire (basic central shape, nothing detailed). I like a sturdy 1.5mm, I like the resistance in bending it. Others like thinner wire. We make 'engrudo' by cooking flour and water to the Linares method, and just use torn newspaper. But first you need to wrap folded strips of dry newspaper tightly around the wire (secure with masking tape), so that the papier-mache will stick to the armature.
