When all smooth and dried -- approx 1-2" newspaper pieces being the final layer (ideally from the pink-coloured Financial Times, smoother finish than ordinary newspaper, yet still absorbent) -- paint on two coats of gesso. I use ready-made gesso. Be sure to let each coat dry well. Then paint with acrylic paints. Then finish with yacht varnish (water-based).

These are really cute! You did a great job capturing the playfulness of the dogs rolling on their backs.

Thanks! The shapes & idea just came to me, but as things progressed I went to one of my best resources, Google Images. I just typed in 'dogs lying on their backs' and got a heap of photos among which I found the ideal reference. Amazing what you can get through Google images -- 'spitting cats' was another, and currently I'm working with 'stretching lions.' Fun.
