I am not familiar with papier mache techniques, what can and can't be done. I need to build a box with one side that slides inside. The side will fit into a groove in the box. Has anyone ever done, seen, or heard of this being done? I want to use papier mache for its weight to strength ratio. Responses in the positive or negitive appreciated, thank you.

Firstly, read and devour the tutorials and articles on this site for all sorts of techniques, recipes etc.
For your box, it should work, though you would probably have to finish and varnish well in order to get a smooth slide.
Cut firm card to the sizes you want. For the sides that have to take the groove, cut two pieces for the inner layer and glue, leaving the slots. Lay a further layer if this is not deep enough.
Make sure you leave enough space in the slot to accommodate the lid (i.e. cardboard plus the layers of paper you glue to it).
Do let us know how you get on . . . . 8)

Thank you for your response. There is much information here and I will digest it before starting. My concern was if papier mache would be a material that could be made exact enough to even think about such a project. After completion I will post pictures on my website.
