Magician's Case

I'm a Magician and am looking for a material to make a case that will double as a stage of sorts for me to perform on and a place to store my stuff. It will be a simple box with a sliding lid/side. The lid/side will be completely removed and then flipped and reinserted into the box. The flipped side will have my close up mat held on it with Velcro. I will attach a handle to the box so that it will carry as a briefcase.

I am not concerned about strength, as I am sure that I can lay-up the paper in such a fashion to support what I have going on. The sliding lid is a concern as it must be a very tight, smooth fit.

Has anyone here experience building such a sliding lid or with your familiarity with this medium do you believe it's possible? I'd like to know that such a thing is possible before jumping in over my head. I like the idea of Papier Mache because of weight to strength ratio and the ease of incorporating other Magical things I have in mind.

Any ideas, experience, or heads up appreciated.

...and thats a good thing.
