new to group!

Hi...my name is Jeanne or Daisy, either is fine. My paper mache project at present is doing memory boxes. I'm painting them, then dressing them up a bit w/more painting, maybe some stickers, but nothing too elaborate.
I'm wondering if anyone out there puts a "primer" of any sort on their PM items before they paint them? Like a base coat of paint or a sealer or ?

Also, do you spray or brush on any kind of sealer afterwards?

I'm hoping to be able to make some extra $$$ selling a FEW of these like at Xmas craft shows, and I want to make sure they are done well. I'm starting now for any shows in the fall.

Thanks in advance for any help or ideas!

Re: new to group!

Hi Daisy!

I'm new here too.  I've just spray painted my pinatas with a couple coats of white spray paint before I paint them, then add tissue.  If you need a smoother surface, I've heard of many people using a few layers of gesso before painting or latex interior house paint.  There are several different kinds of finishes you can use.  Some are clear acrylic urethane and clear spray varnish shiney or flat.  Look through the tutorials in here.  You'll find a well full of information!

Good Luck!

I took your advice and looked in the Tutorials section, which was a great help. I've painted several boxes already and they have turned out well.

I love that papier mache is so versatile, you can paint it, brush or spray, you can decoupage it, trim it with beads, leather, silk flowers, really just about anything!

Re: new to group!

Hi,
I am Rahul from Kolkata.
I prefer a home made primer for my Papier mache work. I use acrylic paint madium. For primer I use a mixture of PVA glue (White adhesive) + Titanium white acrylic paint + Water. The ratio of the mixture can vary but it is roughly 2 : 5 : 1. Let it dry for 8 hrs in dry weather.
I use the same primer for Oil painting mediums.
It dries hard and offers an excellent finish.

I use Common picture varnish with excellent results.

Enjoy Papier mache
