KNIGHT HELMET

Everytime when I try to make a helmet, it turns out very thin. How many layers should I make? It would be the same if I made the whole thing out of posterboard. I want an item which doesn't flatten/rip/tear/bend so easily. Any tips?   :?

Re: KNIGHT HELMET

You need about 6 - 7 layers to make a tough shell. If you are going to take part in a battle re-enactment and bash each other with mock weapons, you may need a few extra layers!   lol  To get maximum strength, make sure you alternate the direction of the strips.

Just for a costume  wink

And.. another question: How do I make the mache surface smooth, so it's not lumpy? Is it possible to sand it?

Re: KNIGHT HELMET

yup and if you use rough to very thin sanding paper you can give it a porcelain finish
