I came across a site showing what some people have been doing with clear sticky tape... they're making people!
First, they wrap people with the tape, with the sticky side facing outward. Then they start wrapping normally. But I think you could probably wrap a person with toilet tissue, and then start wrapping with the tape.
They say the figures are surprisingly strong.
I can see going forward with this idea, and applying papier mache over the tape.

Hi Sue, Thanks for this link. What a great idea this is. I am going to try it on inanimate objects to see if it gives enough detail. It seems so much quicker and easier than other forms of casting, and no mess. Thanks.

Hi Kris, Yea, the leg is Kool. Did you turn the tape over for the first round or use cling wrap instead? (Or both?) The cling wrap idea seems easier, just wrap then tape over. I'm going to do an ornament of mine, a cat and see how it goes, (Gunna) no time this weekend though, it's Easter. HAPPY EASTER TO ALL OF YOU.

I paper mached the lower leg form that I made from clear packing tape. Here is a photo:

I don't really know what I am going to do with it. I was just experimenting. One thing to note if you are going to try this is that the glue does not stick to the tape once dry. So the tape only serves to add initial structure to the form. Once you get the first layer of paper mache over it the paper takes over and the tape just sort-of floats underneath. I did two layers of paper towels. But three or more would be better. Also, I do not see how it would be possible to achieve a smooth surface with this method. The tape will always have ripples and creases in it. You absolutely could make a full sized human with this technique.

I made a tape hand, last night. We were sat in bed watching TV (my husband and I) I whipped out the big roll of tape and taped his hand. I had to cut the first section off and start again because I did it too tight.
I didnt do the fingers as a whole shape, I did them individually, it was really hard.
I will post a pic tomorrow. Its kind of neat and the kids think its funny because they can wear it like a glove!!
